I had the privilege of spending the day with Miguel Aquije, owner of La Emolienteria Bar in the trendy neighborhood of Miraflores in Lima, Peru. Leslie and I had heard about his crazy fun bar which is known for it’s exotic cocktails and ingredients. We heard that every cocktail is made with rare ingredients (like plants or animals only found deep in the Amazon jungle) and that Miguel sometimes goes on month-long journeys into the jungle or into Dangerous Black Markets just to get his hands on some of his ingredients. One famous black market, called el Mercado Peligroso in Lima, is SO dangerous to visit, that you have to go early before noon with bodyguards ( Perhaps because the nefarious characters don’t wake up before noon? My guess:) Even the police aren’t crazy enough to step foot in there!
La Emolienteria is named after the drink emoliente which was served normally outside on the street from a wooden cart. Served hot or cold, with or without alcohol; it’s up to your taste and mood. So with just 5 soles you can warm up this winter by drinking this classic beverage. This space joins several concepts, aside from a bar and art gallery, Miguel wanted La Emolienteria to be eco-friendly. All the decorations have been rescued from La Cachina and remodeled, vintage furniture and lights give this place a eclectic vibe. Noticing the menu, all covers are different and handmade, done by a friendly Colombian who was in town when they opened.
Leslie and I sampled a TON of his famous infused Pisco’s held in large jugs behind the bar, and also some of his even more crazy cocktails that are lit on fire, infused with Mescaline, or even a shot that had a HUGE live Zuri Worm squirming in it from the Amazon Jungle…Yep, supposedly swallowing that thing whole is an aphrodisiac! That one I had to pass on, but Miguel was brave enough to take it down! No thank you!!
