The Kimpton Anglers Hotel in South Miami Beach is a beautiful hotel with a lovely Mediterranean feel. What's really special about this particular place is that they have adopted a reef in the waters directly off the shores of South Miami Beach. Essentially, they’re teaming up with the University of Miami to help with preservation efforts with their researchers, students, and marine biologists to help with coral reel preservation efforts – to replant and re-garden coral underneath the sea to try to bring back the coral populations that are dying because of climate change affecting water temperatures and hurricanes. The coral reef, believe it or not, helps the waves from storms or hurricanes to be less severe and not hit the shore so impactfully! They're furiously trying to strengthen the coral and plant strands of coral that are more heat-resistant to climate change, and so, helping this reef would absolutely aid in slowing significant land erosion and easing the destruction that hurricanes can cause, while also providing a more diverse ecosystem in the Miami waters that was once there. It was super interesting to scuba dive down with the marine biologist to see everyone at work gardening! And without even knowing that their working hard out there, it's right off the coast of Miami Beach! Just a really cool local dive to have gotten to explore and witness, while also learning and appreciating a great deal of conservation efforts in our ocean!
